MFA's GUIDE TO
LETTERS AND OP-EDS

Writing about veg eating and factory farming is a great way to raise awareness and change diets. It's perfect for those who only have sporadic windows of time to get active for animals. While only a small number of pieces get printed, the more submissions with a pro-veg message publications receive, the more likely one of them is to get printed.

STEP
ONE
PICK A TOPIC

When choosing a topic, consider recent news articles, ways to tie in upcoming major events or holidays, and how the topic relates to the publication's audience. The sooner you comment on a news article, the more likely it is your letter will be printed.

Keep in mind that the goal of your piece is to inspire others to cut out or cut back on animal products.

STEP
TWO
FOLLOW THE RULES

You can find out how to submit by looking at the "Opinion" or "About Us" pages on a publication's website. Pay attention to the guidelines for submissions, such as including your contact information and referring to a published article.

Follow the given word limit. For letters, this is typically 150—250 words or less. Op-eds are longer, typically around 750 words. Always keep your writing as short as possible while still getting your message across.

STEP
THREE
WRITE WELL

To write as effectively as possible, try to do the following:

Have one main point and stay on topic.

Make positive, affirmative statements. Say "We can all choose a compassionate plant-based diet" rather than "Don't eat meat."

Reference any personal expertise or experience that might boost your credibility; for example, "As a veterinarian," "As a high school student," or "As a huge foodie…"

Use inclusive language (e.g., "we," "us," and "our") to relate to your audience.

Avoid jargon or acronyms that readers may not be familiar with.

Provide a reference for further information, such as ChooseVeg.com, and end your letter with a call to action.

Thank you for taking the time to speak up for the animals!
Your words can have a far-reaching, positive impact on their lives.
