Media Campaigns Coordinator


Terms of Employment: Full-time, At Will, Exempt

Reports to: Director of Education, Director of Communications

Position Location: Los Angeles, CA

Position Objective:

To work with the Director of Education and Director of Communication in carrying out mass media vegan advocacy efforts, including pitching stories to print, radio, and TV media outlets, placing public service announcements in media and advertising outlets, placing op-eds and letters to the editor in major publications, and creating viral video content for mass distribution on YouTube and other platforms

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Use creativity and media sampling to develop innovative story ideas to pitch to reporters at media outlets around the country.
  • Keep informed of local and national issues, research, and advocacy work related to farmed animal welfare and vegan/vegetarian eating
  • Keep informed of and maintain a database of current media contacts who have covered farm animal and veg eating issues, including mainstream print, online and television media, blogs, and other media outlets, and cultivate relationships with them to garner ongoing media coverage.
  • Research and identify media and advertising outlets to contact to place free pro-vegan and pro-farm animal public service announcements (PSAs), and cultivate relationships with those outlets to solicit ongoing placement of PSAs
  • Identify opportunities for letters to the editor and Op-Ed pieces, and work with Education Department interns to oversee the creation and submission of such pieces
  • Assist in creating concepts for and creating pro-veg viral video content to be distributed on YouTube and other mass media platforms
  • Work closely with and under the guidance of the Director of Communications on pitching stories to the media and viral video outreach
  • Serve as a media spokesperson as necessary for MFA's campaigns, undercover investiations and other programs as well as at national animal rights conferences, vegetarian festivals and other relevant venues across the country
  • Work with volunteers, interns and staff to draft blog entries, web page updates, e-newsletter content, event listings, articles for MFA's semi-annual newsletter and other writing assignments as necessary
  • Adhere to all human resource and administrative policies and procedures
  • Perform other Education Department activities as assigned by supervisor

Position Requirements:

  • Minimum of two years of previous experience in grassroots advocacy
  • Thorough knowledge of animal rights issues and Mercy For Animals' campaigns
  • Thorough knowledge of diet change advocacy research, strategies and effectiveness
  • Thorough knowledge of or willingness to learn media outreach strategies, and willingness to monitor media closely for outreach opportunities
  • Professional appearance and adherence to a healthy vegan lifestyle
  • Support for Mercy For Animals' philosophy and the ability to professionally advocate Mercy For Animals' positions on issues
  • Commitment to the objectives of the organization
