Dear Friends,
Leading up to the election on November 2 we were all told our vote mattered. I received six door hangers and twelve telephone calls on that important day from organizations reminding me to brave the long lines at the polls and cast my vote. For some, Election Day appears to be the only time our voices can be heard and counted in our society.
The past elections have proven that every vote does matter. Few people, however, realize that everyday we cast powerful, life-changing (and potentially life-ending) votes. These votes are cast not behind the closed curtain of the polling booth, but rather in the aisles of the supermarket, at the drive-through, and at our favorite restaurants. As unintended as it often is, every time we make a purchase, our money is casting a vote. When we sit down to eat we can choose to cast a vote that results in egregious acts of animal cruelty, or we can cast a vote that helps build a society where all living beings are treated with the compassion and respect they deserve.
In this issue of Outrage you will read about MFA’s most recent undercover investigation at a so-called “Animal Care Certified” egg factory farm. As you will learn, hidden inside nearly every omelet and carton of eggs is an untold story of animal suffering. No compassionate person would burn off the beak of a chirping chick, cram her into a cage so small that she could barely turn around, deny her veterinary care when she is sick or injured, and then slit her throat when she is no longer useful. Why then would we intentionally pay someone else to commit these atrocities on our behalf?
Election Day is just one day we have to make our voices heard. The items we choose to put in our shopping carts or select from the menu today are casting votes that affect not only our own health, but also that of our planet and the creatures with whom we share it. Please, make your vote one of fairness and justice for all beings.
For the animals,
Nathan Runkle
MFA Director
