On September 15, 2004 members of Mercy For Animals held a silent protest against animal abuse in the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus outside Toledo’s Sports Arena. Activists distributed information detailing animal cruelty under the big top and aired graphic undercover footage depicting the violent training endured by animals enslaved in the circus. Numerous ticket-holders were so appalled by the behind-the-scenes footage that they ripped up their tickets and pledge to never again attend circuses that imprison animals. Television news coverage of the event reached thousands of Toledo residents with the message that Ringling tortures animals.
