Undercover investigations have been successful
throughout the history of the animal rights movement
by bringing to light the horrific, and often unseen,
exploitation and abuse that animals endure behind
locked doors. They have helped launch national
organizations, bring animal cruelty charges against
the parties involved, and in some cases, shut down
abusive facilities.
Since 2001, MFA has conducted undercover investigation at four of Ohio's largest egg factory farms, each of which have exposed egregious acts of animal cruelty, neglect, and abuse. The disturbing findings from these investigations have gained much needed attention for the plight of hens imprisoned in battery cages.
In 2002 and 2003, MFA conducted a seven-month long undercover investigation at rodeos across the state of Ohio that revealed startling animal abuse, both in the arena and behind the scenes. MFA investigators captured on film animals being repeatedly shocked with electric prods, beaten with iron rods, punched, kicked, tormented, and left to suffer from injuries.
In 2007, an MFA investigator went behind the closed doors of one of
the country's largest poultry slaughterhouses – House of Raeford
Farms, Inc. in Raeford, North Carolina. MFA's investigator worked in
the "live-hang" area of the plant (where live birds are snapped into
shackles on the slaughter line), secretly filming egregious acts of
animal cruelty with a hidden camera, including workers throwing,
punching, kicking, sexually assaulting, and ripping the heads off live
birds.
