On July 14, 2006 members of Mercy For Animals distributed dozens of free Tofutti Cuties ice cream sandwiches – a delicious dairy-free alternative – to Dayton’s hungry downtown lunch crowd. The event coincided with National Ice Cream Day (July 16th) and encouraged consumers to enjoy a cruelty-free vegan diet. MFA members distributed hundreds of Why Vegan? booklets and aired undercover footage depicting the cruel treatment endured by cows and their offspring on dairy factory farms.
Few consumers know that dairy cows are repeatedly artificially impregnated in order to force them to produce unnaturally high quantities of milk. Their calves are torn from their side within days of birth, causing severe distress. Many of the male calves are relegated to the dark, cramped conditions of a veal crate before being killed. Once a dairy cow’s production declines, they, like their offspring, are slaughtered at an age that is just a fraction of their natural life expectancy.
