Brooklyn, Protest Against Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating ContestThursday, July 4, 2013

Please join Mercy For Animals in a head-turning protest against Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island. The larger-than-life demonstration will feature MFA’s new mascot, a massive, 10-foot-long inflatable puppy crammed inside a hot dog bun and topped with ketchup, mustard, cheese, and lettuce. This provocative display will be joined by activists wielding signs with images of an adorable puppy and lovable piglet sitting side-by-side and read, “Why Love One but Eat the Other?” The contest attendees will be encouraged to “Choose Vegetarian."

For nearly a century, Nathan’s Famous Frankfurters has profited off the merciless killing of cattle at slaughterhouses and beef processing plants. Nathan’s Annual July Fourth International Hot Dog Eating Contest is a brutal display of the company’s complete disregard for animals. Cattle raised for Nathan’s hot dogs are subjected to numerous painful procedures during their lives on the feedlot, including the repeated infliction of third-degree burns, having their testicles cut off, and dehorning without any painkillers.

Please join us in Coney Island as we speak up against the abuses animals are subjected to before becoming Nathan’s Famous Frankfurters.

Signs, banners, and leaflets will be provided. Join us promptly at 10:30 a.m. on Surf Ave. between Stillwell Ave. and W. 16th St. Please dress professionally, as media coverage is expected.

For more information, please email Eddie Garza, campaigns manager, or call 917-756-8130.
