Mercy For Animals ended 2022 by advocating for animals on the Brazilian political stage, spreading our message during NFL games, expanding and increasing the transparency of cage-free commitments made by companies around the globe, and exposing animal cruelty in Brazil.
Spreading Our Message During NFL Games
United States and United Kingdom
In December, Mercy For Animals secured three 30-second ad spots during NFL games. The ads appeared on 8,100 screens in 30 airports in the United States and UK during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Inspiring hope in a better future, the ad reminds viewers that together we can create a kinder world for all. View the ad here.

Advancing Global Commitments to Reducing Chicken Suffering
Global
After dialogue with Mercy For Animals and being mentioned in the International Cage-Free Equity Index, Associated British Foods, a major multinational food manufacturer and ingredients company, expanded its cage-free egg commitment to include all its businesses globally by 2025, with the exception of its existing 2028 cage-free deadline in Brazil. The commitment covers all the company’s operations in 52 countries, including the previously excluded grocery segment in Asia.
After weeks of campaigning by Mercy For Animals in Brazil, Club Med has made its cage-free progress public. Club Med has committed to sourcing only cage-free eggs for its 71 resorts by the end of 2025 in Europe, Brazil, and the United States and by 2027 in other markets.
Representing Animals on the Political Stage
Brazil
In Brazil, Mercy For Animals was invited to participate in an open plenary on animal rights. The public hearing was held by incoming president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva administration’s technical group on the environment. Citing scientific data, plenary participants advocated the importance of animal welfare for the existence of all beings.

Exposing Animal Suffering
Brazil
A new Mercy For Animals investigation reveals the horrific reality for animals at a municipal slaughterhouse in Brazil. The investigation documents animals dragged by ropes, beaten with a sledgehammer, and stabbed while still conscious. Mercy For Animals delivered this evidence together with a complaint to Brazil’s federal public prosecutor’s office.
Although sledgehammer slaughter in Brazil has already been prohibited through ministerial regulations and some state laws, no federal law to end this brutal practice exists. Mercy For Animals is asking the National Congress of Brazil to approve PL 49/2019, which proposes a ban on the use of sledgehammers and other egregiously cruel methods of slaughtering animals.
Increasing Transparency About Animal Welfare
United States
After discussions with Mercy For Animals, Costco has published an updated version of its animal welfare policy. Notable policy updates include providing greater detail about Costco’s progress toward improving housing for female pigs, establishing a time frame for sourcing fresh pork from open-pen housing for the United States and Canada, and including all dedicated suppliers when reporting the stocking density of chickens raised for meat
