Monthly Impact Report

March Progress

Thanks to our generous supporters, March was a great month for Mercy For Animals. We promoted a successful United Nations resolution, achieved major meat-reduction commitments from cities in Brazil, and persuaded more companies to ditch cruel cages for hens.

Bringing Millions More Vegan Meals to Schools

Brazil

The Brazilian city of Anchieta participated in LUPPA, a lab on urban food policy, where Mercy For Animals’ Alimentação Consciente Brasil program was a mentor institution. After the lab, Anchieta committed to reducing animal products served in schools and government institutions by 20 percent, which will impact 48,800 meals per year.

Mercy For Animals partnered with Humane Society International on this commitment. Together, we held an in-person training with local chefs and provided plant-based recipes.

Mercy For Animals also worked with the city of Salvador on a food policy commitment that, once fully implemented, will replace 10 million animal-based meals per year with plant-based ones. This is one of our most significant food policy wins to date. Around 170,000 students will be served plant-based meals one day a week. We expect to have the program running by August of this year. We partnered with Humane Society International on this commitment.

Supporting a UN Resolution on Animal Welfare

Global

The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) unanimously adopted its first resolution on animal welfare. This historic move means world leaders recognize that good animal welfare benefits human health, our environment, and sustainable development.

UNEA meetings are hosted by the UN Environment Programme, which is mandated by the international community to address issues including climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and sustainable development.

In January, Mercy For Animals and 11 other organizations united in submitting a letter to the U.S. Department of State requesting support for the resolution.

Mercy For Animals attended the UNEA meetings to promote the resolution.

Ending Cages and Reducing Animal Suffering

Global

The Cheesecake Factory and Bloomin’ Brands (parent company of Outback Steakhouse) announced plans to transition to 100 percent cage-free eggs by 2030. The decisions came after pressure from Mercy For Animals and the Open Wing Alliance.

Urging Better Transport Regulations

United States

Mercy For Animals launched a campaign calling on the USDA to update archaic animal transport regulations. More than 1,500 supporters signed a petition to the USDA. Add your name.

Gaining a Seat on an Animal Welfare Council

Mexico

The state legislature and environmental commission in Nuevo León approved the creation of the Citizen Council for Animal Protection and Welfare.

After six months of interviews with deputies, Mercy For Animals will have a representative on the council.

By being part of this council, we can start working with government representatives in Nuevo León to evaluate, propose, and create policy around animal welfare.

Building a Movement

Brazil, United States, Mexico

We believe that the world’s mightiest institutions will heed the call to reform when it comes from powerful and interconnected communities. That’s why our supporters are so important.
