March 2023
Last month, Mercy For Animals held our largest demonstration ever, helped secure important cage-free commitments from two major food companies, and released an undercover video investigation revealing the brutal lives of hens at a Mexican egg farm.
Unveiling the Horrific Lives of Hens
Mexico
A Mercy For Animals undercover investigation captured never-before-seen footage of the brutality of life for hens at an egg farm in Mexico. The footage shows thousands of chickens in filthy cages crammed together too tightly to walk freely, rest comfortably, or even spread their wings. Some chickens die trapped in cage wire, while others fall into pits of waste below the cages, where they are unable to escape.
Speaking Out for Animals
Mexico
On March 2, 140 Mercy For Animals’ global staff members and Mexico-based outreach volunteers achieved a huge success by holding our largest demonstration ever. Staff led a mass performance at Mexico City’s Monumento a la Revolución in which spectators joined the activists in chanting for compassion.
Progress with Cage-Free Commitments
Global, Brazil
After a global campaign by the Open Wing Alliance, which includes Mercy For Animals, Cerealto Siro Foods has released a roadmap for meeting its 2020 commitment to completely eliminating cage eggs from its entire global supply chain. The company reaffirmed its intention to complete this transition by the end of 2025. Similarly, Super Nosso, one of Brazil’s largest supermarket retailers, has committed to selling only cage-free eggs in all its stores by 2028.
Exposing Slaughterhouse Suffering
Brazil
Mercy For Animals has released Abate Brutal (Brutal Slaughter), based on a 2022 investigation into a municipal slaughterhouse in Brazil. Narrated by actress Isabelle Drummond, the investigation shows oxen subjected to immobilization and slaughter practices that cause extreme suffering. Other animals are dragged by ropes, beaten with a sledgehammer, and stabbed while still conscious. Mercy For Animals has formally delivered this evidence to Brazil’s public prosecutor’s office.
