Bill Nye: “Plant-Based Diets Are the Future”

In a recent AMA, Bill Nye, also known as Bill Nye the Science Guy, recommended a plant-based diet to fight climate change.

From over 10,000 comments in the thread, Nye chose this one: “What are your thoughts on animal agriculture and the promotion of a vegan diet as to reduce our impact on climate change?

Nye replied:
Plant-based diets are the future. I look forward to food preparations that are not “derivative bits,” as we say in comedy writing. Instead of “coconut bacon,” for example, I hope there is just delicious stand-alone coconut preparations. Cooking is a competitive business. I look forward to the emergence of new plant-based dishes.
During a 2015 lecture at the University of Central Arkansas, Nye said that “plant-based diets may be the future.” “May be“? We’re happy to see his view has evolved.

Raising animals for food is terrible for the planet. In fact, it produces more greenhouse gas emissions than all the cars, planes, and other forms of transportation combined.

What’s more, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reports that carbon dioxide emissions from raising farmed animals make up about 15 percent of global human-induced emissions, with beef and milk production as the leading culprits.

A vegan diet isn’t just good for the planet. It also spares countless animals from a lifetime of misery at factory farms.

While we applaud Bill Nye for bringing attention to the environmental dangers of animal agriculture, we wish he’d follow in the footsteps of many environmentalists who have ditched animal products.

Plant-based alternatives to meat, dairy, and eggs require a mere fraction of the resources to produce as their animal-based counterparts. So it’s clear there’s no such thing as a meat-eating environmentalist.
