Update: After making headlines in November 2023 by launching vegan boxed mac and cheese in the United States, The Kraft Heinz Not Company is disrupting the dairy industry once again, this time with the Canadian debut of vegan Kraft mac and cheese, or “KD,” as it’s called in the country.

Canada is the world’s biggest consumer of mac and cheese, so the launch of vegan KD has the potential to make a big difference for animals and the environment.

KD is Canada’s most iconic mac and cheese brand, and we are excited to leverage its strength alongside NotCo’s revolutionary technology for our first branded Canadian product launch.

—Lucho Lopez-May, CEO of The Kraft Heinz Not Company

Originally published November 29, 2023: Kraft is launching completely plant-based versions of its classic original and white cheddar mac and cheese nationwide in the United States!

The Kraft Heinz Not Company

Rolling out from now until early 2024, the new vegan mac and cheese is Kraft’s third venture with dairy-free company NotCo. A Chilean startup, NotCo uses AI technology to create sustainable, ethical plant-based versions of dairy products. Lucho Lopez-May, CEO of The Kraft Heinz Not Company, said in a statement:

By leveraging the strengths of both companies, we’re offering the creamy and comforting experience Kraft Mac & Cheese fans have loved for over 85 years—without the dairy.

In June of this year, The Kraft Heinz Company released three flavors of Kraft vegan cheese slices nationwide. Available in American, provolone, and cheddar, NotCheese slices are classic Kraft singles reimagined, made with water, coconut oil, modified starch, and chickpea protein.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CuDDLWeBxw7/

NotCheese slices debuted for a limited test run in Ohio, where they quickly became a hit. In fact, a reported 91% of shoppers interviewed shared overwhelmingly positive impressions. NotCo’s head of marketing and strategy, Katie Pekarek, elaborated on the test’s success:

The decision to expand nationally was based on our successful Cleveland test market that ran for 16 weeks starting in November 2022. Kraft NotCheese Slices quickly became the #1 branded plant-based slice in dollar sales.

The company also released NotMayo—a delicious vegan version of Kraft mayonnaise—this year just in time for the Fourth of July. According to Pekarek, “plant-based is one of the fastest growing segments in food and beverage, exceeding total food sales growth by three times.”

You may remember the horrific undercover investigation we released in 2022 showing workers repeatedly pummeling cows with sledgehammers. The footage was captured at a municipal slaughterhouse in Brazil.

Using evidence from the investigation, we presented a claim to the region’s public prosecutor’s office that recounted the welfare issues uncovered at the facility. The prosecutor’s office held meetings with slaughterhouse administrators and other stakeholders for over a year and a half and determined that the slaughterhouse needed to be shut down.

On February 16, we received notice that it had closed! This case is powerful. It shows that investigations can bring slaughter lines to a halt and that cruelty to farmed animals will not go on without consequences.

While this is a major step toward sparing animals the worst suffering, we know that to create lasting impact, we need to change the system. That’s why we are calling for a federal ban in Brazil on the use of sledgehammers as a method of slaughter.

To keep the pressure on, we released more undercover footage. It reveals other slaughterhouses where cows are still beaten with sledgehammers. The investigation landed front-page coverage in O Globo, the leading daily newspaper in Brazil and the most prominent print publication of the Grupo Globo media conglomerate.

Government officials in Brazil have received more than 750,000 messages from our supporters. Our organizing manager in the country recently met with Congressman Felipe Saliba to urge swift approval of the federal bill to ban slaughtering animals with sledgehammers, PL 49/2019.

Calling for legislative change can help tackle the root causes of animal suffering. When you support our policy initiatives, you help promote lasting change that benefits farmed animals on a large scale. You can help us continue this critical work by making a gift today.

Learn more about this critical work and the progress we’ve made by exploring the Mercy For Animals Impact Center. This tool details our work for farmed animals and promotes an evidence-based approach to advocacy.

Have you ever heard the term “ag-gag”? Ag-gag laws, no matter their form, are blatantly designed to be a threat to animals, workers, consumers, and First Amendment rights.

What Is Ag-Gag?

The meat industry is waging an all-out war on your right to know where your food comes from. Whistleblower investigations routinely expose horrific animal abuse at factory farms and slaughterhouses. Yet rather than improve conditions, the meat industry is trying to silence whistleblowers by passing ag-gag laws. These dangerous laws often violate our First Amendment rights and threaten animal welfare, food safety, workers’ rights, and the environment.

Many of these laws criminalize documenting and making public the conditions at factory farms and food-processing facilities. Without strong government oversight of factory farms, whistleblowing is an important safeguard against cruel and unsanitary practices.

Who Do Ag-Gag Laws Impact?

Ag-gag threatens the free speech of not only animal advocates but journalists, concerned workers, and other individuals who seek to inform the public about the conditions of factory farming and the need for policy reform and enforcement of existing standards. The public is left in the dark about many aspects of the food system, and government regulations often go unenforced.

These laws also ensure that the stories of suffering animals will never be told. Time and again, Mercy For Animals’ undercover investigations at factory farms and slaughterhouses have revealed abuses that shock and horrify most Americans—which is why the factory-farming industry is fighting so hard to keep the suffering of farmed animals hidden behind closed doors.

What Is Being Done?

Ag-gag bills are being introduced and fought across the country. The Kentucky senate just passed a bill backed by the poultry industry that would put new restrictions on capturing footage of factory farms and food-processing sites. In response, Mercy For Animals has been reaching out to our supporters in Kentucky to take action.

The fight against ag-gag legislation has seen major gains. Over 30 years ago, Kansas became the first U.S. state to outlaw taking photographs or recording video footage inside a factory farm “with the intent to damage the enterprise conducted at the animal facility.” In 2020, the United States District Court for the District of Kansas struck down nearly all provisions of this law, finding that it violated the First Amendment. And in 2022, the Supreme Court of the United States rejected the state’s appeal to review.

Right now, a handful of states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, and North Dakota, have ag-gag laws in effect. In addition to Kansas, Utah and Idaho managed to pass ag-gag legislation that was later struck down. Many other similar bills have been defeated across the country.

What Can I Do?

You have the power to speak up for animals and speak out against harmful ag-gag legislation. Sign up to keep informed and be the first to know if ag-gag is coming to your state.

Yesterday, Gov. Jay Inslee signed HB 1153 into law, and Washington became the first state to prohibit farming octopuses! This is a huge win for animals and the planet.

Sponsored by Representative Peterson, the new law is an opportunity to prohibit octopus farming in Washington before it starts. As part of a coalition, Mercy For Animals sent out action alerts and emails urging volunteers to stand up in support of this important bill. Our senior state policy manager, Alex Cerussi, even testified before the Washington State Legislature:

Octopus possess the ability to experience pain, stress, and fear. All animals with these capacities deserve to be protected. … Washington has always been a leader in animal welfare and environmental protection, which is why the legislature must take a stand against this inherently cruel and unsustainable practice.

What is octopus farming?

Just like other forms of factory farming, octopus farming entails raising animals for slaughter in crowded spaces with little room to move. This is especially cruel for octopuses, as these solitary, territorial animals naturally avoid one another and prefer to live in dark, quiet places.

How does octopus farming impact animals?

In an analysis published in Science and Technology, a team of researchers concludes that farming octopuses would harm both the environment and animals. One of the study’s authors, Jennifer Jacquet, states:

Universities and companies are investing time and money into farming octopus, which we believe is a big mistake. Mass producing octopus would repeat many of the same mistakes we made on land in terms of high environmental and animal welfare impacts.

Octopuses do not fare well in captivity. In fact, octopuses currently living at aquatic farms are likely to suffer high death rates and increased aggression. They are also likely to experience worse parasitic infections than octopuses in nature.

How does octopus farming impact the environment?

Farming octopuses takes a toll on the environment. A driving force of overfishing is turning catch into feed for other animals. Because octopuses are carnivores, they require other animals to eat. Jennifer Jacquet explains that octopus farming could cause more harm than other forms of farming because “we have to feed octopus other animals.”

Additionally, octopus farming produces high levels of pollution from feces and uneaten feed. Aquaculture facilities for octopuses will create an increased risk of nitrogen and phosphorus runoff that contributes to environmental pollution and disrupts delicate local marine ecosystems.

It’s Girl Scout cookie season! This year six vegan Girl Scout cookies are available, but figuring out how (or where) to get them can be a bit confusing. If you’re wondering how to satisfy your cookie cravings compassionately, read on to discover how you can get your hands on some delicious vegan Girl Scout cookies.

1. Know the Vegan Options

Girl Scout cookies are produced by two different bakeries: Little Brownie Bakers, which makes one vegan cookie, and ABC Bakers, which makes all six vegan options this year. While both bakeries produce similar cookie varieties, the recipes, ingredients, and names may differ slightly between the two. Knowing which bakery supplies your local Girl Scout troop is key to determining which vegan options are available in your area. As of now, the following flavors are typically vegan:

  • Thin Mints (ABC Bakers and Little Brownie Bakers): These classic chocolate-mint cookies are a favorite among many, and luckily, they are free of animal-derived ingredients regardless of where they’re made.
  • Peanut Butter Patties (ABC Bakers): A delicious vanilla cookie is topped with a thick layer of peanut butter and enrobed in chocolate. Don’t confuse them with their doppelganger, Tagalongs.
  • Lemonades (ABC Bakers): These tangy lemon-flavored cookies are topped with powdered sugar and are a refreshing choice for those who prefer a citrusy treat. Avoid their non-vegan counterpart, Lemon Ups.
  • Toast-Yay (ABC Bakers): These adorable French toast–inspired sugar cookies have a maple syrup glaze. They are an easy choice because there’s no non-vegan version.
  • Caramel Chocolate Chip (ABC Bakers): The name says it all. These yummy cookies are not only plant-based but gluten-free. They are somewhat similar to non-vegan Toffee-Tastic cookies, so don’t get them confused.
  • Adventurefuls (ABC Bakers): This yummy brownie-inspired, sweet and salty cookie has a caramel center. Be sure to check the box when buying these because their nearly identical counterparts from Little Brownie Bakers have the same name but contain animal-derived ingredients.

2. Find a Local Troop Selling Vegan Cookies

Now that you know which cookies are vegan and are aware of the different bakeries, the next step is to find out where you can purchase the vegan versions. Girl Scout cookies are typically sold through local troops during cookie season, which typically runs from January to April. To locate a troop selling vegan cookies in your area, you can use the Girl Scout cookie finder tool available on the Girl Scouts website. Simply enter your zip code, and the tool will provide you with a list of nearby troop locations and cookie sale dates. Make sure to find out which bakery supplies the cookies to ensure the troop offers vegan options. You should be able to tell from the cookie names, or you can check out this handy map.

3. Check Online Options

If you cannot find a local troop selling vegan Girl Scout cookies, don’t worry! Many troops offer online ordering. You can search for troops anywhere in the country on the Girl Scouts website by typing in a zip code you know is in ABC Bakers’ area and checking to see which troops offer online ordering. Websites like Amazon or eBay also often have listings for vegan Girl Scout cookies, although availability and price may vary depending on the seller.

4. Support Vegan-Friendly Troops

Another option is supporting troops actively promoting vegan Girl Scout cookies. Some troops may specifically advertise their vegan offerings online. Keep an eye out for announcements on vegan websites or social media posts from troops promoting their vegan cookie options. By purchasing from these troops, you not only satisfy your sweet tooth but support their commitment to offering inclusive choices for all cookie lovers.

5. Spread the Word

Once you’ve secured your stash of vegan Girl Scout cookies, why not spread the word about how delicious they are? Share your experience on social media, post reviews of your favorite flavors, and recommend troops that offer vegan options. By raising awareness about vegan Girl Scout cookies, you can help others discover these delicious treats and support the Girl Scouts’ efforts to provide more animal- and environment-friendly choices for consumers.

Getting your hands on vegan Girl Scout cookies is easier than ever. So go ahead, indulge your sweet tooth, and support the Girl Scouts in their mission to build girls of courage, confidence, and character—one plant-based cookie at a time.

Around 10,000 cows are expected to perish in the Smokehouse Creek Fire—the largest fire ever recorded in Texas. The fire has spread over 1.2 million acres in the Texas Panhandle, causing widespread damage and the deaths of both people and animals. As of this writing, the fire is still only 87% contained.

Texas cattle stampede away from plumes of smoke as wildfires covering 300,000 acres force thousands to evacuate.

♬ original sound – nbcnews

According to Texas agriculture commissioner Sid Miller, more than 85% of the state’s cattle population resides on ranches in the Panhandle. Miller stated that he anticipated the deaths of 10,000 cattle, who will either die in the fire or be euthanized afterwards:

A lot of those cattle are still alive, but the hooves are burned off, the teats on their udders are burned off. It’s just a sad, sad situation.

Like tragic barn fires, which happen all too often, wildfires have devastating impacts on farmed animals. According to a 2021 report by the Office of the Texas State Climatologist, climate change is expected to bring drier, hotter conditions and substantially increase the risk of wildfires throughout the state. Rising temperatures could mean not only more horrific deaths by fire but greater chances of heat stress in farmed animals.

Animal Agriculture and Climate Change

The global food system accounts for about one-third of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, and animal agriculture is a major part of the problem. Because farmers must clear countless acres of land for pasture space and to grow feed crops, animal agriculture is a huge driver of deforestation. It is also a leading source of methane, a greenhouse gas that can trap 28 times more heat than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period.

Animal agriculture is a significant source of global emissions, worsening the climate crisis and causing suffering to people and animals alike. But transforming our food system—and shifting toward more plant-based food in particular—can be a powerful solution to reduce global emissions and secure a more livable future. Start exploring plant-based eating today!

Another one of America’s best-known staples is getting a vegan makeover! Kraft Heinz has announced that Oscar Mayer will launch its first-ever plant-based offerings, vegan hot dogs and sausages, later this year.

According to reports, the new plant-based products, NotHotDogs ($5.99) and NotSausage ($7.99), will roll out nationwide just in time for summer. The company says the animal-free dogs will taste just like their animal-based counterparts, which have been on store shelves for over 140 years, and offer a “smoky, savory taste and thick, juicy bite.”

Oscar Mayer vegan hot dogs and sausages are the result of a partnership between Kraft Heinz and NotCo, a startup that led to vegan boxed Kraft Mac & Cheese, mayonnaise, and cheese slices, which rolled out in 2023.

While we wait for the Oscar Mayer vegan hot dogs and sausages to hit store shelves, many other delicious and compassionate franks are available to satisfy any craving. Link up with our list of vegan hot dogs, and let us know which one is your favorite.
