McDonald’s is closing 350 restaurants worldwide, including
220 in the U.S. and China, according to a recent article from Nation’s
Restaurant News.
The company’s net income has declined by a whopping 33 percent
from last year, despite attempts to boost business.
“McDonald’s management team is keenly focused on acting more
quickly to better address today’s consumer needs, expectations and the
competitive marketplace. We are developing a turnaround plan to improve our
performance and deliver enduring profitable growth, said McDonald’s CEO Steve
Easterbrook in a statement.
If McDonald’s really wants to develop a worthwhile
“turnaround plan, it would do best to follow in the footsteps of places like Ikea and White
Castle, which have added meatless versions of signature dishes to their
menus.
In 2011, an MFA
investigation at Sparboe Farms, a McDonald’s egg supplier at the time,
found systematic cruelty to animals. Treated as mere egg-producing machines, these
chickens used to make Egg McMuffins were mutilated without painkillers and
forced to live in tiny cages amid waste and rotting carcasses.
Take a look:
It’s clear that McDonald’s has a lot of work to do,
including a shift away from cruel animal foods, if it wants to appeal to a
broader audience.
