Acclaimed actor and environmentalist Leonardo
DiCaprio is saving the world, one vegan investment at a time. That’s right,
when sales of vegan foods have boomed by 20 percent in the past year,
DiCaprio is wise to invest in some of the successful food companies that are
changing the way the world eats.
Just last week DiCaprio took to Facebook to say how he was “proud
to be an investor in Beyond Meat, pioneering the future of protein. Last year
DiCaprio invested in Beyond Meat, a company famous for its
mouthwatering plant-based burgers and sausages.
According to VegNews,
Beyond Meat CEO Ethan Brown said:
I am thrilled to officially welcome Leonardo DiCaprio to the Beyond Meat family. His investment and role as an advocate reflects a shared vision that meat made directly from plants, like our Beyond Burger, has enormous benefits for human health, the climate, natural resources, and animal welfare.
DiCaprio is a longtime environmentalist who
isn’t afraid to speak out against the negative effects of factory farming. The actor said, “Shifting from animal meat to the
plant-based meats developed by Beyond Meat is one of the most powerful measures
someone can take to reduce their impact on our climate.
Beyond Meat isn’t the only vegan company DiCaprio
has used his star power and his wallet to support. Last year he made a minority equity investment in the vegan snack company HIPPEAS. And most
recently, he invested in the popular plant-based milk company Califia Farms. DiCaprio is the latest Hollywood
heavyweight to invest in Califia, joining Karlie Kloss, Tyler Hubbard, and
Brian Kelley.
But DiCaprio’s activism doesn’t stop there. In 2014 the actor produced Cowspiracy,
a powerful documentary about the connection between climate change and animal agriculture.
He has long advocated protecting our planet from climate change.
Investing in vegan food companies is certainly
a good financial move. A study commissioned by the Plant Based Foods
Association and The Good Food Institute revealed that the plant-based foods market had topped $3.1 billion in sales,
and according to market research firm Global Data, veganism in America increased by 600 percent between 2014
and 2017.
For the billions of animals suffering at
factory farms, the growing popularity of vegan food is great news. Pigs, cows,
chickens, and other farmed animals are subjected to unimaginable cruelties:
extreme confinement; brutal mutilations; and bloody, violent deaths.
While you may not be able to invest in a
plant-based future as much as DiCaprio has, you can certainly support one by
switching to a healthy, sustainable, and compassionate vegan diet.
