Maggie Q Sounds Off on Why She’s Vegan

In an interview with South China Morning Post, Maggie Q shares why she decided to ditch meat, dairy, and eggs.

The actress explains that it all started nearly 20 years ago when she learned about how animal agriculture is destroying the environment: “Once you’ve done the research you can’t unlearn what you know.

And she has done her research. In the interview, the Designated Survivor star shared a few statistics regarding the ecological benefits of a plant-based diet: “As a vegan I save 1,100 gallons of water a day. It takes 440 gallons of water to produce a pound of eggs, 1,000 gallons to produce a gallon of milk, 900 gallons to produce a pound of cheese, and 2,500 to produce beef.

When asked how raising animals for food relates to environmental sustainability, Q responded:
We are seeing climate change right in front of our eyes. One of the things that is missing from political discourse, from policy, from government, is the fact that the leading cause of carbon emissions in the world is animal agriculture and no one is talking about it. This is the real issue that is driving climate change.
Like Maggie Q, many people consider themselves environmentalists. But by consuming animal products they’re contributing to one of the main causes of environmental destruction. That is why some of the most prominent environmentalists have seen the light and have ditched meat, dairy, and eggs.

Raising animals for food produces more greenhouse gas emissions than all the cars, planes, and other forms of transportation combined.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, carbon dioxide emissions from raising farmed animals make up about 15 percent of global human-induced emissions, with beef and milk production as the leading culprits.

Furthermore, simply by avoiding animal products, we can cut our carbon footprints in half. Keep in mind that a pound of beef requires 13 percent more fossil fuel and 15 times more water to produce than a pound of soy.

There is no such thing as “sustainable” meat, and plant-based alternatives to meat, dairy, and eggs take a mere fraction of the resources to produce as their animal-based counterparts.

But a vegan diet isn’t just good for the planet; it also spares countless animals a lifetime of misery at factory farms. Pigs, cows, chickens, and other farmed animals suffer horribly. These innocent beings face unimaginable cruelties: extreme confinement; brutal mutilations; and bloody, violent deaths.
