McDonald’s Sold More Than 150,000 McVegans in the Product’s First Month

According to FoodNavigator, more than 150,000 McVegans were sold at McDonald’s locations across Finland and Sweden in January.

Orkla Foods, the company that helped McDonald’s create the plant-based patty for the McVegan, reports that demand is exceeding the company’s expectations. Orkla’s CEO, Peter Ruzicka, tells FoodNavigator, “People want to eat more plant-based food, partly for health reasons, but also because of environmental reasons. Ruzicka says the sales reflect the start of a “very, very exciting partnership with the fast-food giant.

After a successful trial, McDonald’s announced last year that its McVegan would be a permanent menu item in Finland and Sweden.

McDonald’s is just the latest quick-service restaurant to offer vegan fare. Bareburger, Umami Burger, and Momofuku Nishi offer the Impossible BurgerTGI Fridays is rolling out the Beyond BurgerYard House offers Gardein meat substitutes; and Pizza Hut recently started offering Violife cheese at select U.K. locations.

The introduction of these new plant-based products reflects a rising demand for vegan food. The research firm Global Data reports that veganism in America has increased by 600 percent since 2014, and Allied Market Research predicts that the meat substitute market will grow 8.4 percent over the next three years, potentially reaching $5.2 billion globally by 2020.

What’s more, a recent study commissioned by the Plant Based Foods Association and The Good Food Institute revealed that the plant-based foods market had topped $3.1 billion in sales. And Lux Research expects plant-based proteins to make up a third of the global protein market by 2054.

More people enjoying vegan food is great news for the billions of animals who suffer horribly at factory farms. Cows, pigs, and chickens raised and killed for food are subjected to unthinkable cruelties: tiny, filthy cages; burns and amputations; and merciless slaughter.

See for yourself.
