Mercy For Animals Joins Greta Thunberg to Demand Meaningful Climate Action

Mercy For Animals is proud to join thousands of activists, scientists, and others by adding our name to climate activist Greta Thunberg’s open letter to EU and global leaders.

Sent to EU leaders and heads of state on July 16, the letter features a list of demands that center on treating climate change like the crisis it is. The demands include making ecocide (destruction, especially intentionally, of the natural environment) an international crime; halting investments in and subsidies for fossil fuels; and creating climate policies that reduce racial, economic, and gender inequality.

Our mission at Mercy For Animals aligns with Thunberg’s fight against climate change. Thunberg went vegan when she learned about animal agriculture’s devastating effects on the planet. Since then, the 17-year-old activist has not been shy about promoting a plant-based lifestyle, from mentioning her veganism on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to posting the hashtag #govegan on her Instagram page after visiting Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary. She also convinced her family to eat mostly plant-based:
I kept telling them that they were stealing our future and they cannot stand up for human rights while living that lifestyle, so then they decided to make those changes. My dad is vegan, my mom, she tries—she’s 90 percent vegan.
Eating plant-based food is one of the best things we can do to combat climate change. In fact, according to research published in the journal Climatic Change, choosing plant-based foods can cut your carbon footprint from food in half. That’s why Mercy For Animals works with policymakers around the world to reduce meat, dairy, and egg consumption and increase the availability of plant-based, climate-friendly options.

In 2006, the United Nations warned in a landmark report that raising animals for food was one of the “most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global.”

Beyond its massive contribution to climate change, animal agriculture is also a leading cause of deforestation, land degradation, water pollution, and biodiversity loss.
