New Strain of Bacteria Causing People Who Eat Seafood to Get Very Sick

According to the Portland Press Herald, University of New Hampshire researchers have discovered a new strain of bacteria in seafood from the Atlantic Coast that is causing thousands to get sick.

Researchers believe the new strain, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, to be the world’s leading contaminate of shellfish. When ingested, it causes diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, people have died.

Cheryl Whistler, director of the university’s Northeast Center for Vibrio Disease and Ecology, said:
It wasn’t understood that there was a strain that lived in the Atlantic already that was causing increasing infections. We knew people were starting to get sick more frequently by unknown strains. It wasn’t clear if every person was getting sick by a different strain. Are there a hundred different strains making people sick or just a couple making people sick?
In the past, only one strain of the bacteria was known to cause this type of food poisoning, which Whistler notes is on the rise in New England and already responsible for sickening an estimated 45,000 people in the U.S. each year.

Seafood-borne illnesses are all too common. In fact, the FDA reports that seafood imports from China—around 27 percent of the seafood consumed by Americans—are frequently contaminated. Incredibly, one Chinese seafood exporter was caught feeding fish a partial diet of feces from hundreds of pigs and geese in an attempt to cut costs.

Eating fish is not only unhealthy but also unspeakably cruel, as an MFA undercover investigation at a fish slaughter facility revealed.

The best thing we can do to remove our support from the cruel fishing industry is to leave fish off our plates and switch to a compassionate vegan diet.
