The End of Modern Medicine? - Mercy For Animals

The End of Modern Medicine?

jerseycows.jpgA recent report released by the World Health Organization (WHO) is creating a stir, reaffirming some of our greatest fears over the misuse and abuse of antibiotics on today’s factory farms.

According to CNN, “The World Health Organization says antimicrobial resistance — which includes drug-resistant bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites — is seen in every region of the world.”

The report, which includes data from 114 countries, contains some alarming facts. CNN quotes WHO, which states that “a post-antibiotic era — in which common infections and minor injuries can kill — is a very real possibility for the 21st century.”

Scientists agree that the emergence of superbugs is largely the result of antibiotic overuse on factory farms. The Pew Charitable Trusts concluded that in the United States, 80 percent of all antibiotics used are given to farmed animals. While these drugs are sometimes used to prevent and treat illness in farmed animals, low doses of antibiotics are also administered to make animals grow more quickly and to compensate for unhygienic conditions. These low doses are non-lethal and allow bacteria to mutate and become resistant.

The best way to safeguard our future and prevent cruelty to animals is to leave meat, eggs, and dairy off of your plate. For information on how to transition to a healthy and compassionate vegan diet, visit ChooseVeg.com.
