The Rise of Vegan Faux Fish

Fisheries are known to cause environmental degradation and suffering for billions of fish and other aquatic animals.

Last year, CBS News reported that sushi lovers are driving the iconic Pacific Bluefin tuna to the brink of extinction, and an Oceana study found that fisheries could be driving the extinction of other aquatic animals, like dolphins, sea turtles, and whales.

Commercial fisheries are one of the largest threats to conservation of fish populations and vital aquatic ecosystems. The good news is that there’s never been a better time to ditch fish. In fact, a recent article on NPR.org highlights the growing number of fish-free seafood alternatives on the market.

NPR explains that “with issues like overfishing, bycatch, and high mercury levels gaining traction with consumers, it may only be a matter of time before demand kickstarts a faux-fish movement on the heels of the plant-based protein revolution already underway.

Several companies have taken notice and created plant-based seafood alternatives to meet the growing demand. Sophie’s Kitchen, Gardein, and Tomato Sushi, which offers a tomato-based tuna product you’d swear was the real thing, are just a few.

Not only is fishing unsustainable, but as an MFA undercover investigation at a fish slaughter facility revealed, it’s also unspeakably cruel.
