A newly released undercover investigation by The Humane Society of the United States reveals rampant animal abuse at a battery egg facility owned by Cal-Maine, the nation’s leading egg producer. Abuses documented include overcrowded hens suffering from broken legs and other injuries, hens trapped in cage wire unable to reach food or water and countless dead hens left to rot in cages with live birds still laying eggs for human consumption.
Cal-Maine confines nearly 30 million laying hens across the country to wire battery cages so small they can’t fully spread their wings or walk freely for their entire egg-producing lives. Extensive scientific research shows that these battery cages cause extreme suffering and dramatically increase the odds of dangerous salmonella infections and contaminated eggs.
Despite subjecting millions of animals to abuses that would shock and horrify most Americans and placing consumers at an elevated risk for deadly salmonella poisoning, Cal-Maine reports approximately $1 billion in annual sales to “a majority of the largest food retailers in the U.S.”
The good news is that Americans can easily withdraw their financial support for Cal-Maine and other companies that profit at the expense of animals by choosing healthy and humane vegan alternatives to meat, dairy and eggs. Please visit ChooseVeg.com for helpful tips and tasty egg-free recipes.
