"I just started dating again. When do I tell my dates that I’m vegan?"
Welcome to the world of vegan dating. Veganism may be a dealbreaker for some people, and that’s OK. If someone is put off by your cool new lifestyle, don’t take it personally.
Dating at its core is looking for compatibility, not just likeability.
For this reason, I recommend bringing it up early, even when planning the first date.
If your date is at a restaurant, this topic will come up naturally. If you just can’t see someone who eats animals, again, that’s OK.
Check out your local veg meetup group, volunteer at the next veg festival in your town, or try an exclusively vegan online dating app. Yes, they do exist!
My kids don't like eating vegetables! Ideas?!
Lead by example. Children learn habits and good practices from their parents, so fill your plate with veggies!
Let your kids participate. They can help you prepare juices, smoothies, salads, breakfast bowls, and more. This will make mealtime fun.
Disguise veggies. Use cauliflower rice or zucchini noodles for the base of your meals. Try mixing finely shredded carrots into your tomato sauces for some hidden nutrients. How about puréed sweet potatoes in your pancake or waffle recipes? Turn veggies into “fries” by lightly breading and baking them.
Add some color to this learning journey! Remember that kids are often visual learners; they love colors and variety. Infuse water with fruits and blend veggies into your smoothies. Bring all colors of the rainbow to their plates.
My college doesn't have great vegan cafeteria options. What do you recommend?
Request more vegan options! Ask your dining services to offer plant-based meats, which appeal to most students. Falafel wraps, stir-fries, pasta primavera, and bean burritos are easy meal options. Adding more nuts, beans, vegetables, and fruits to the salad bar is also an easy fix.
The trick is to always be polite but vocal—remember, you’re speaking up for yourself and animals by requesting veg options.
If the change is happening slowly, you may have to get creative in the meantime. Try packing your own salad dressings or sauces to mix with the basics in the dining hall, or add your own toppings to the bread offered at the sandwich station. When in doubt, brown bag your own simple lunch, such as rice and beans, pasta and steamed asparagus, or PB&J with baby carrots and sugar snap peas.
