Domino’s, Pizza Hut, and Papa John’s Introduce Vegan Options… Just Not Here

They said 2019 would be the “year of the vegan” and they weren’t kidding. So far this year, major pizza chains Domino’s, Pizza Hut, and Papa John’s all announced they’d add vegan options to their menus—and it’s only January, folks.

In Australia, Domino’s just released its Vegan Summer BBQ Pizza (it’s summer down under) in 700 stores! It features vegan mozzarella, a barbeque sauce base, and tons of veggies. In the U.K., Pizza Hut blew out of its new vegan Jack ’N’ Ch**se Pizza, selling more than 9,000 jackfruit-topped pies in just two weeks. And on Monday Papa John’s announced it would introduce vegan cheese options across the U.K. due to consumer demand.

All this is super exciting but we have just one tiny question: When is this vegan pizza revolution coming to the U.S. and Canada?

In case pizza chains haven’t noticed, the movement toward plant-based eating is well on its way in North America. In fact, research shows that there were six times as many vegans in the U.S. in 2017 as in 2014. And to the north, Health Canada, the governmental department responsible for Canada’s public health, just released guidelines that favor plant-based foods and exclude dairy as a food group.

This shift away from dairy is not only excellent for our health and the environment but good for animals. The fact is, cows exploited for dairy are some of the most abused animals on the planet. Kept in crowded, filthy conditions, these animals are routinely mutilated without painkillers, forcibly impregnated, and violently slaughtered.

As more people awaken to the truth behind cheese, milk, and other dairy products, they’re choosing humane and delicious plant-based alternatives. This is one reason sales of vegan cheese spiked 43 percent last year!

While we celebrate the deliciously dairy-free pizza boom happening overseas, we don’t have to wait to make our own pies. From Daiya to Follow Your Heart to Parmela, vegan cheese abounds in the U.S. and Canada.
