Every 20 Seconds, One Person Is Signing Up to Try Veganism

According to Veganuary, a record number of people are signing up to spend the first 31 days of 2019 vegan.

Veganuary, a charity dedicated to helping people switch to a plant-based diet, announced earlier this month that it expected more than 300,000 people to sign up, tripling the 100,000 pledges from 2018. Now, it reports that on average, one person signs up to go vegan every 20 seconds!

The charity’s growth has been astronomical. According to Plant Based News, a mere 3,300 people took part in Veganuary’s first year in 2014. So if Veganuary sees the participation it expects in 2019, the number of pledges will have increased nearly 100 times in five years!

Veganuary offers a vegan starter guide, a webpage to help dispel common myths about veganism, a guide to help you shop vegan at the supermarket, and resources for eating out at popular restaurant chains.

All of us can view footage of an undercover animal rights exposé with immediate effect if we so choose. With material like that so publically available, it’s helped get more people questioning what’s been hidden from them in our food production.
Over the past decade, veganism has seen consistent growth as millennials, the largest generation and the one with the most self-identified vegetarians, purchase their own food. But if you think millennials are vegan AF, you should know that Generation Z is even more into plant-based foods! As this generation grows older, we can expect to see a boom in vegan alternatives to meat, dairy, and eggs.

The demand for vegan products worldwide is already skyrocketing. Between 2014 and 2016, the number of new vegan food products rose by an astonishing 92 percent in Australia. And the research firm GlobalData reports that there were six times as many vegans in America in 2017 as in 2014.

This is all great news for the billions of animals who suffer at factory farms each year. Cows, pigs, chickens, and fish raised and killed for food are subjected to unthinkable cruelties: tiny, filthy cages; horrific mutilations; torturous transport; and violent slaughter.

Thankfully, with the growing demand for plant-based options, this is the perfect time to switch to a compassionate vegan lifestyle.
