Here’s Why the Milk Industry Has Been Lying to You for Years

The dairy industry knows that milk doesn’t really make your bones stronger. Yes, you read that right.

From school cafeteria posters to national advertising campaigns, the industry has been telling us that milk is vital for strong, healthy bones. But musculoskeletal epidemiologist Tania Winzenberg and her colleagues found the exact opposite to be true. In fact, populations that consume the most cow’s milk and other dairy products have some of the highest rates of osteoporosis and hip fractures. Hmm…

Winzenberg and her associates also discovered that increases in dairy or total dietary calcium intake do not reliably increase bone mineral density or reduce fracture rate in children or adolescents. Instead, exercise significantly increases bone density and bone strength.

So does milk do a body good? Not exactly. Especially not if you’re a cow. At dairy factory farms, cows are roughly handled, forcibly inseminated, and kept in terrible conditions. Their calves are torn away from them shortly after birth. Male calves are killed for veal. Females are raised to produce more milk, trapped in a cycle of abuse for years until they are considered “spent and sent to slaughter.
