Moooove Over Milk… Millennials Are Done With Dairy

A recent Mirror article discusses plummeting dairy sales in the U.K. due to lack of consumption among millennials.

“[I]ndustry leaders have warned farmers are facing a crisis as vegan diets are behind young people losing their taste for milk, cheese and eggs, states the article.

This trend isn’t unique to the U.K. The New York Times reports that 12 percent of millennials identify as faithful vegans or vegetarians; that’s three times more than Generation X.

U.S. milk consumption has fallen a whopping 40 percent since 1970, with millennials, now the world’s largest generation, accelerating the decline. By contrast, sales of nondairy milk alternatives have soared by 30 percent since 2011.

The Mirror cites endorsement from vegan celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Ellie Goulding as a contributor to the rise of veganism while the Guardian notes social media applications like Instagram and YouTube are exposing teens to vegan messaging more than ever. Regardless of why millennials are ditching animal products, it’s great news for the future of our planet.

Earlier this year, Reuters released an article detailing the benefits of a vegetarian world, including reducing greenhouse gases, fighting poverty, sparing the lives of billions of animals, and saving more than $700 billion in healthcare. Thanks to millennials, this utopian world might one day be a reality!

Not veg yet? You can join the growing number of people taking a stand for animals, the environment, and their own health by transitioning to a plant-based diet.
