Burger King rolled out a new seasonal burger called the
Nightmare King. Made up of a quarter pound of beef, a chicken
fillet, American cheese, and bacon on a green sesame seed bun, the sandwich is supposedly
“clinically proven to induce nightmares. But the truth is, this burger is
actually a nightmare for animals, the planet, and those who eat it.
The fast-food company worked with Paramount
Trials and Florida Sleep & Neuro Diagnostic Services to sleep-test 100
people for 10 nights. Scientists claim that eating the burger before bed makes
it 3.5 times more likely that you’ll have a bad dream. But maybe these
nightmares are triggered by remorse from eating a product of such blatant
cruelty and destruction. Don’t think so? Keep reading.
For starters, the Nightmare King is an environmental disaster.
Raising animals for food is one of the leading causes of climate change,
deforestation, and water pollution. In fact, raising
animals for food produces more greenhouse gas than all the cars,
planes, and other forms of transportation combined. According to the Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, carbon dioxide emissions from raising farmed animals make up
about 15 percent of global human-induced emissions, with beef and milk
production as the leading culprits.
There is no such thing as “sustainable meat.
And all the facts show that plant-based alternatives to meat, dairy, and eggs
take a mere fraction of the resources to produce as
their animal-based counterparts.
In addition to hurting the planet, this
sandwich hurts your health. Countless studies prove that plant-based foods are
significantly healthier than animal products. Scientists have shown that a plant-based diet reduces one’s risk of cancer, heart
disease, diabetes, and obesity. In fact, a recent study from Harvard
Medical School found that at least one-third of early deaths could be prevented if
everyone switched to a plant-based diet.
What’s more, researchers at the Mayo Clinic
found that long-term vegetarians lived on average 3.6 years longer
than their meat-eating counterparts.
Lastly, the cruelty involved in making this
burger is a nightmare for farmed animals. From the cows brutally killed for the beef patties and
the chickens violently shackled upside down and cut open at
the throat for the fillet to the calves ripped from mother cows for the cheese
and the pigs kept in extreme confinement and slaughtered
for the bacon, the animal suffering required to make the Nightmare King is
truly horrifying.
Cows, pigs, and chickens raised and killed for food are
subjected to intense and horrendous abuse: gruesome mutilations;
cramped confinement and overcrowding; and violent, bloody slaughter. If we
treated just one dog or cat the way the meat, dairy, and egg industries treat
billions of animals, we’d be behind bars for animal abuse.
