Plant-Based Food Orders Have Increased by 25 Percent, Says New Grubhub Report

As vegan menu offerings continue to grow, Grubhub has confirmed that interest in plant-based food is more than a passing phase. In December, the food delivery service released its Year in Food report for 2018, which details the country’s most popular food trends.

The report reveals increasing demand for plant-based options across America, from in-restaurant dining to takeout orders.

This pattern has continued into 2019, with Grubhub orders of vegan-friendly foods increasing by an impressive 25 percent since this time last year. Part of the increase is due to new exciting offerings like the Impossible Burger, as orders for the meatless patty have risen by 82 percent.

Interestingly, the Impossible Burger was listed in the top three most popular food orders for both the Midwest and the West Coast, nabbing the number one slot in the Midwest! In fact, the Impossible Burger has been so popular that it has been selling out at White Castle and Red Robin. To ramp up output and meet demand, Impossible Foods has increased staff at its plant in Oakland, California, where production goes on 24 hours a day. If that’s not a sign that times are changing, we don’t know what is.


Grubhub’s findings are not surprising. As the country becomes more aware of the negative impacts of meat and dairy, consumers and investors are turning to foods that are friendlier to the environment and animals. This awareness is propelling a revolution in plant-based food options, many of which are coming to fast-casual restaurants, where most of Grubhub’s customers order from.

In the past few months alone, KFC launched a vegan sandwich in the U.K., and Del Taco expanded its Beyond Meat offerings after a nationwide rollout was one of its most successful product launches ever. Even Burger King is jumping on the bandwagon, bringing its plant-based Impossible Whopper to more and more cities.


Additionally, Carl’s Jr. created the Beyond Famous Star burger, Qdoba recently brought vegan ground beef from Impossible Foods to all locations, and Red Robin has announced plans to launch the Impossible Burger at 570 locations throughout the United States!
