At this point you’ve probably heard about the smoked watermelon ham that’s taking the internet by storm. That’s right, at Duck’s Eatery in New York City, they cook the melon the same way they do the meat, resulting in the smoked melon’s uncanny resemblance to its animal-based counterpart.
But this isn’t the first time fruit and veggies have been used to replace meat. In fact, vegans have been doing this for years. So without further ado, here are eight other fruits and vegetables vegans use to replace animal products:
1. Carrot Hot Dog
2. Mushroom Bacon
3. Tomato Sushi
4. Carrot Lox
5. Hearts of Palm Seafood
6. Cauliflower Steak
7. Chickpea Tuna
8. Barbecue Jackfruit
While store-bought meat replacements are quick, tasty, and healthy, we’re all about using whole-food alternatives as well. It may take a bit more work, but it’s incredibly satisfying (and delicious) to take a fruit or vegetable that most people view a certain way and turn it into something resembling meat. If you don’t believe us, give it a shot!
Eating plant-based foods is all the rage right now. As a matter of fact, the research firm Global Data reports that there were six times as many vegans in America in 2017 as in 2014, and Allied Market Research predicts that the meat substitute market will grow 8.4 percent from 2015, potentially reaching $5.2 billion globally by 2020.
Of course, more people enjoying vegan food is great news for the billions of animals who suffer horribly at factory farms. Cows, pigs, and chickens raised and killed for food are subjected to unthinkable cruelties: tiny, filthy cages; burns and amputations; and merciless slaughter.
