Plant-Based Diet Promoted as Best Way to Manage Type 2 Diabetes

Joe Loria November 5, 2018
Currently 4.5 million people in the U.K. and 30
million people in the U.S. have diabetes, and 15 percent of deaths worldwide
are attributed to the disease. And according to the International Diabetes
Federation, the disease will affect approximately 642 million people by 2040.
Research has found that a plant-based diet
including fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and seeds is associated with a
significantly lower risk of Type 2 diabetes.
Eight clinical trials conducted between 1999
and 2017 compared a plant-based diet with other diet types and assessed the
impact of a vegan diet. Six of these trials involved informing patients about
optimal nutrition to help them understand the benefits of a plant-based diet.
EurekAlert reports:
Average (HbA1c) and fasting blood glucose
levels fell more sharply in those who cut out or ate very few animal products
and these participants lost nearly twice as much weight: 5.23 kg vs 2.83 kg.
The fall in blood fats—a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease—was also
greater in those on plant based/vegan diets.
The findings also suggest that a plant-based
diet may slow progressive nerve damage associated with diabetes. Six of the
studies reviewed showed those on a vegan diet were able to decrease or
discontinue drugs they were prescribed for their diabetes and associated
conditions like high blood pressure.
But this is nothing new—other research has linked animal
products to diabetes as well. In its 2018
Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes
, the American Diabetes Association identified
a vegan diet as a way
to mitigate the onset and effects of Type 2 diabetes
. A Harvard
School of Public Health study reported that even minimal
consumption of red or processed meat significantly increases the chance of Type
2 diabetes
.
People living with diabetes can use this knowledge to increase
their overall well-being. Last year, Brooklyn borough president Eric L. Adams reported
that he had lost 30 pounds and completely reversed his Type 2 diabetes after
switching to a vegan diet
.
