This past week, Mercy For Animals held two eye-catching demonstrations to protest extreme animal abuse within the pork industry outside the Oklahoma Pork Congress in Oklahoma City, and the National Pork Producers Council Spring Legislative Conference in Washington, DC.
The traffic-stopping demonstration featured a giant, 10-foot-tall pig, bloody with sores and locked in a narrow gestation crate, confronting pork producers for their inherently cruel practice of confining mother sows in tiny, filthy crates, where they are unable to turn around, lie down comfortably, or engage in any natural behaviors. The giant pig was joined by activists wielding signs with images of abused pigs, reading: “Pork Producers Torture Animals” and “Pork’s Dark Side: Animal Cruelty.”
“It is high time that Oklahoma pork producers realize it is out of step with most Americans’ basic values to confine mother pigs inside stalls so small that the animals are virtually immobilized their entire lives,” said National Campaign Coordinator Phil Letten in an interview with the Oklahoma Gazette. “If pork producers subjected dogs and cats to the array of animal abuses they inflict on pigs, they could be arrested and jailed on grounds of animal cruelty.” Univision television network filmed our crew in Washington, DC, exposing viewers to the horrific cruelties pork producers inflict on mother sows.
Both events proved to be a big success for pigs, sending a strong message to the pork industry that animal abuse will not be tolerated.
