The CFIA veterinarian ordered the suffering animal to be killed in the holding area and the body subsequently disposed of, but despite the animal’s indications of Mad Cow Disease, the slaughterhouse operatives ignored both of these mandates. The cow’s flesh presumably entered the human food supply.
The conviction resulted in a paltry $2,500 fine. Compare that to news out yesterday that the PEI government had just awarded the plant $1.5 million, and that since 2005 the provincial government had vested a total of over $40 million in the slaughterhouse!
Why must private, hard-earned tax dollars be used to bolster slaughterhouses that don’t even abide by government regulations, particularly when an increasing number of Canadians no longer support it?
Fortunately, by withholding our consumer dollars from cruel and corrupt industries, we can protect ourselves from disease and animals from needless suffering. For information on transitioning to a healthy and humane, plant-based diet, visit ChooseVeg.ca.
