167,000 Pounds of Ground Beef Recalled After E. coli Scare

Yet another meat recall is making headlines this week. This time, hundreds of thousands of pounds (167,000, to be exact) of ground beef are being recalled for possible contamination with the dangerous E. coli bacteria. Do you know where E. coli comes from? That’s right: sh*t.

Yahoo! Health reports:

Infection with E. coli typically leads to symptoms of food poisoning, including bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and dehydration two to eight days after exposure. Most healthy people recover from the symptoms on their own after a week or less, but young children and older adults may be at a higher risk for hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.

Terrifying.

But tainted meat isn’t the only serious concern posed by modern farming.

Treated as unfeeling meat-producing machines, cows and other animals raised for food are subjected to horrors few of us can even imagine. Abuses like painful mutilations without painkillers and brutal slaughter are the norm.

See for yourself:

Grossed out? You should be.

Luckily, there’s never been a better time to protect your health and the lives of countless animals by ditching meat in favor of cruelty-free alternatives.
