A Portrait of Elderly Animals

Screen Shot 2014-01-23 at 1.41.42 PM.pngAfter a year of helping care for her aging mother with Alzheimer’s, photographer Isa Leshko found her work shifting focus.

Traveling around the country to sanctuaries that rescue animals from factory farms, Leshko started photographing elderly animals. She remarks:

I want my images to inspire greater empathy toward animals, particularly farm animals. It is very rare for a farm animal to actually live its full natural lifespan given that most of these animals experience brutality and death early in their lives. By depicting the beauty and dignity of these creatures in their later years, I want to encourage people to question and challenge the way farm animals are currently treated.

The following five-minute video documents the creation of Leshko’s moving portraiture, which you will not soon forget.

While the animals Leshko photographed were lucky enough to live into their golden years, the overwhelming majority of farmed animals are slaughtered at just a fraction of their natural lifespan and suffer miserably during their lives.
