A Trip to SASHA Farm Sanctuary

A dedicated group of Mercy For Animals volunteers rolled up their sleeves, laced up their leather-free work boots, and headed up to Manchester, MI for a fun-filled weekend working at SASHA Farm sanctuary.

SASHA Farm is the Midwest’s largest farmed animal sanctuary. The name SASHA is an acronym for the animal rescue operation – Sanctuary And Safe Haven for Animals. In addition to the top-notch veterinary care, food, water and comfortable housing, SASHA provides the animal residents with affection, social interaction with others of their own species, and a sense of security.

SashaFarm2.jpgA group of twenty high school students from Northside College Prep joined MFA on Saturday, volunteering for the day. Many of the students had never interacted with a farmed animal before. While their hearts were opened to the sensitive and intelligent nature of farmed animals, their eyes were also opened to the cruel truth behind factory farming systems.

SASHA co-founder, Monte, shared the touching stories of how many of the animals first came to the sanctuary. Doggie, a lovable Holstein cow, was so named because of his fondness for digging holes in the ground – much like a dog. Doggie exemplifies the bridge between all animal species and how similar they are. Each animal had a touching and inspiring story, making the experience of volunteering with these animals very rewarding and fulfilling.
