Are Pulled Oats the New Jackfruit?

Joe Loria March 2, 2016
The $1.8 billion meat substitute market is one of the fastest-growing food trends. Food
& Wine
reports that Finnish food startup Gold & Green is
looking to get in on it with a revolutionary new product: pulled oats.
A mix of Nordic oats and beans, the product is similar in appearance
and texture to pulled pork, but according to some, tastes like chicken. It’s also
non-GMO, non-allergenic, gluten-free, and unlike many other meat substitutes, not
soy-based.
So why oats and beans? According to Reetta Kivela, co-founder
of Gold & Green, “They balance each other. The amino acids that oats
lacks are present in beans. So they are a good couple.
While pulled oats will be available in a range of flavors, including
tomato, smoked pepper, coriander, kaffir lime, sesame, ginger, and “nude,
don’t get too excited. They’re not expected to hit supermarket shelves in the
United States quite yet.
Luckily, there is a plethora of cruelty-free meat
substitutes already widely available. Check out our favorites here
and here.
