You may have heard the recent buzz that beloved plant-based meat company Beyond Meat is on the verge of filing for bankruptcy. But there’s good news! The company has denied these claims, calling them “unequivocally false,” and a company spokesperson said, “We have not filed, nor are we planning to file, for bankruptcy.”
Despite rumors, Beyond Meat is continuing their operations and plans to revitalize their product lineup. The company has introduced an updated version of their plant-based ground, now made with just four ingredients: their signature ingredient, fava beans, along with potato starch, water, and psyllium husk. At just 140 calories per serving, it packs 27 grams of protein and four grams of fiber. The new Beyond ground is pre-seasoned and will come in delicious Tuscan tomato, Korean barbecue, and chipotle-pineapple varieties.
Additionally, earlier this month Beyond Meat CEO Ethan Brown mentioned on a podcast that the company would soon rebrand from Beyond Meat to simply “Beyond,” aiming to create a clear distinction between the brand and meat products altogether.
The Significance of Brands like Beyond Meat
Beyond Meat is not merely a brand; it’s part of a movement that challenges the meat industry and promotes a more sustainable way of eating. The company’s approach has also spurred competition and innovation within the food industry, moving major players to invest in plant-based options.
Why Support Plant-Based Products?
Humans can live happy and healthy lives without eating animals. Despite this, every year, the meat industry strips billions of animals of everything natural and important to them. They’re typically crammed into sheds, crates, and cages for most of their lives and often castrated and mutilated without painkillers. And even animals raised at so-called humane farms will meet a terrifying end at the slaughterhouse.
What’s more, the meat industry dumps feces, blood, and other contaminants into rivers and streams across the United States. In fact, slaughterhouses and meat-processing facilities are top industrial sources of phosphorus and nitrogen pollution, which promotes algae blooms. These blooms can make water unsafe for drinking or outdoor recreation and create oxygen-deprived zones that cause aquatic animals to flee or die. The global food system also accounts for about one-third of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, and animal agriculture is a major part of the problem.
Animal agriculture is destroying our planet and causing suffering to people and animals alike. But shifting toward plant-based foods like Beyond Meat is a powerful solution that can transform our food system.
