Denny’s Working with Suppliers to Eliminate Cruel Gestation Crates

cute-pig111.jpgDenny’s, one of the largest restaurant chains in the country, announced yesterday that it will be working with its pork suppliers to eliminate the use of gestation crates.

“Denny’s takes its role as a responsible corporate citizen seriously, which is why we have adopted a strong position on animal welfare. We will endeavor to purchase products from companies that provide gestation crate-free pork and are committed to influencing our suppliers to share in a gestation crate-free vision for the future. Working to eliminate gestation crates is best for our company, our guests, and our continued work to improve animal welfare,” said Greg Linford, Denny’s vice president, procurement and distribution.

The list of restaurant chains working to eliminate gestation crates from their supply chains continues to grow week after week. Denny’s joins McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, and Tim Hortons in this commitment.

MFA supports these supply chain improvements and expects to see more and more restaurants, foodservice companies (Compass Group) and retailers (Safeway) making this move.

Gestation crates are small metal enclosures in which pregnant sows are barely able to move and are effectively kept for their entire lives. “Basically, you’re asking a sow to live in an airline seat,” said world-renowned farmed-animal welfare expert Temple Grandin.

While Mercy For Animals applauds Denny’s for taking this very important step to lessen the suffering of farmed animals, the best thing consumers can do to prevent unnecessary suffering is to adopt a kind and compassionate vegan lifestyle.
