PR Newswire recently reported that “fish perception and cognitive abilities often match or exceed other vertebrates,” including non-human and human primates. This realization makes the egregious abuse suffered by fish on factory farms even more unconscionable.
This impressive cognitive ability of fish, also recently reported by NPR, means that these creatures are acutely aware of the cruelty inflicted on them, and suffer profoundly as a result.
Unbeknownst to most consumers, many of the horrid practices that plague other animal farms, such as cruel slaughter methods and severe overcrowding, also characterize factory fish farms.
Fish are known to have “excellent long-term memories (including time-place, spatial, social, and aversive experiences),” which brings their plight into a whole new light, considering most consumers wouldn’t tolerate the same treatment of cats or dogs — animals with comparable memories and capacity for thought.
