Just last month, the World Health Organization (WHO) placed
processed meats in the same carcinogenic
category as asbestos and smoking cigarettes.
Estimating that diets high in processed meats cause 34,000
cancer deaths per year worldwide, the WHO found that even unprocessed red meats
like beef, veal, lamb, and pork are “probably carcinogenic.
Now, a new article in The
Guardian is highlighting the consumer backlash in the U.K. and the
consequent drop in processed meat sales.
“Supermarkets across the UK reported a £3m drop in sales of
sausages and bacon in the two weeks after the report’s publication, as shoppers
digested the news and considered the health effects of eating them, the article
explains.
Following the report’s release, sales of prepackaged
processed meats took a hit and at the beginning of November, sales of sausage
were down 13.9 percent while sales of prepackaged bacon had declined 16.5
percent.
In addition to placing you at risk for cancer, eating meat
contributes to horrific animal suffering. On modern farms, animals are subjected
to extreme confinement, mutilations without painkillers, and a merciless
slaughter.
The short lives of farmed animals are filled with misery
and deprivation.
The best step consumers can take to protect their health and
end their support of cruel factory farms is to adopt a healthy plant-based
diet.
