The egg industry spends millions of dollars trying to convince the public that eggs are nutritious. But even the USDA isn’t buying what they’re selling.
Our government knows eggs aren’t healthy. It’s why American Egg Board, a promotional marketing board appointed by the U.S. government, can’t legally claim eggs are any of these: nutritious, low fat, part of a balanced diet, low calorie, healthful, healthy, good for you, or even safe.
Sadly, this doesn’t stop egg companies from running ads claiming otherwise.The USDA even admits that “because eggs have the amount of cholesterol they do,” the words healthy and nutritious “are problematic.”
So what can American Egg Board say? They can say eggs are nutrient-dense, since there’s no legal definition of this phrase. Heck, you can say anything is nutrient-dense.
So are eggs healthy?
The answer is simple. No. Consider this study published in the Journal of Atherosclerosis Research that found regular egg consumption to be as dangerous as smoking cigarettes. Researchers found that because egg yolks are loaded with cholesterol, a known risk factor for coronary artery disease and heart attacks, eating one egg per day was just as bad for your heart as smoking five cigarettes per day.
Eating eggs isn’t just unhealthy. Most egg-laying hens live out their lives in barren battery cages with less floor space than the dimensions of a sheet of notebook paper. What’s more, because male chicks don’t lay eggs or grow quickly enough to be raised profitably for meat, they are often killed within hours of hatching. Some are ground up alive while others are gassed or suffocated.
