San Francisco-based startup Memphis Meats is making headlines after debuting the world’s first chicken and duck meat made from cells without animal slaughter.
Memphis Meats had already introduced real beef burgers created without cows, but as Gizmodo food tech writer Ryan Mandelbaum wrote, this “is a whole ’nother ball game.
Memphis Meats CEO Dr. Uma Valeti told The Good Food Institute:
Chicken and duck are at the center of the table in so many cultures around the world, but the way conventional poultry is raised creates huge problems for the environment, animal welfare, and human health. We aim to produce meat in a better way, so that it is delicious, affordable and sustainable.
Dr. Valeti is absolutely right. Birds are among the most abused land animals on the planet. They are also slaughtered in the highest numbers. Chickens, for example, comprise 95 percent of land animals raised and killed for food in the U.S.
Unfortunately, no federal law protects animals during their lives on factory farms. What’s more, the law that’s supposed to protect animals at the slaughterhouse, the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, does not extend to birds.
To make matters worse, chickens raised for meat have been bred to grow so unnaturally large that they are often immobilized under their own weight. They also suffer heart attacks, organ failure, and debilitating pain as a result.

Luckily, Memphis Meats’ amazing new products will change all this. People will enjoy meat without contributing to horrific cruelty.
