Just in Time for Grilling Season, a Third of Americans Say They’re Ditching Meat for Vegan Options

Joe Loria July 3, 2018
According to Mintel’s 2018 Summer Food and Drink Trends report, veganism is on the rise. Researchers
find that 33 percent of U.S. consumers plan to purchase more plant-based food
products in the next year. The number’s even higher—37 percent—among millennials.
The report explains that specialty vegan foods
are “reaching new heights in taste and quality, with jackfruit products, creative
veggie burgers, and innovative meat substitutes becoming all the rage for
summer barbecues.
This is particularly true for the increasingly
popular jackfruit, which people love for its meaty
texture. In fact, plant-based company Upton’s Naturals recognizes that its jackfruit
products significantly boost its overall sales. Company founder Dan Staackmann
says, “Since our jackfruit launch, which seems to have kick started the
jackfruit trend, our company has doubled its staff and grown overall by 300%.
Over the past decade there’s been a global
shift away from animal products. According to research firm Global Data, veganism in America increased by 600 percent between 2014
and 2017
, and Allied Market Research predicts that the meat substitute market will grow 8.4 percent from 2015 to
2020
, potentially reaching $5.2 billion globally.
What’s more, a recent study commissioned by
the Plant Based Foods Association and The Good Food Institute revealed that the
plant-based foods market had topped $3.1 billion in sales.
And Lux Research expects plant-based proteins to make up a third of the global protein market by 2054.
More people enjoying vegan food is great news
for the billions of animals who suffer horribly at factory farms. Cows, pigs,
and chickens raised and killed for food are subjected to unthinkable cruelties: tiny,
filthy cages; burns and amputations; and merciless slaughter.
Don’t believe us? See for yourself.
