Life-Threatening Salmonella at a Store Near You

Salmonella, which is found in over 10 percent of all raw chicken breasts sold nationwide, is the cause of more hospitalizations and deaths than any other foodborne illness, sickening more than a million people a year. In fact, the salmonella infection rate in people has risen 44 percent in just the last decade.

Recently, a particularly virulent strain of salmonella linked to Foster Farms may have sickened over 16,000 people who ate meat contaminated with fecal matter.

NBC News reports that this salmonella outbreak has not only affected people in multiple states, but has brought to light several weaknesses in food safety oversight by government agencies, namely the USDA.

As it stands, there are no requirements that raw poultry be free of salmonella, and it continues to be sold to the public. Foster Farms is actually still referring to its chicken as a “wholesome, Grade A product.”

The best way to avoid salmonella poising, and prevent cruelty to chickens and other farmed animals, is simply to stop eating them. For tips on making the transition to a vegetarian diet, visit Chooseveg.com.
