Marvel’s newest superhero is 13-year-old vegan activist Genesis Butler! Marvel’s Hero Project is an original Disney+ series that features remarkable children from around the world. The most recent episode tells the story of Genesis, a teenager who has spent years advocating for animals and inspiring other young people to eat plant-based.
Genesis—selected from a group of 21 children—received a personalized vegan leather jacket and a comic book starring herself as the superhero. Even better? Marvel donated $10,000 to the International Fund for Animal Welfare in her name! Genesis told VegNews:
I think it is really cool to be a superhero. My favorite part is that other kids will see me speaking up for the animals and be encouraged to do the same and be a hero for the animals, too.
Genesis is truly an inspiration for children and adults alike, earning numerous awards for her activism, including the Animal Hero Kids Sir Paul McCartney Young Veg Advocate, Vegan Kid of the Year from Vegans Are Cool, and Kid of the Year from PETA.
Her nonprofit, Genesis for Animals, provides funding to animal sanctuaries and rescues. Genesis also speaks out against animal testing and is a strong advocate for plant-based meals in hospitals, correctional facilities, and nursing homes. She even gave a TEDx talk when she was just 10 years old, drawing parallels between animal agriculture and environmental destruction.
According to her mother, Genelle, Genesis has never questioned why she was put on this earth:
Genesis told us from an early age that she was here for a reason. She told us, “I’m here to help save animals and humans because we’re all connected.”
The episode is available through Disney’s streaming service. You can join Genesis in being a superhero for animals by eating more plant-based foods.
