MFA Delivers Over 100,000 Signatures to Idaho Governor Urging Ag-Gag Veto

Nathan Runkle February 26, 2014

Today, as the Idaho House of Representatives passed the state’s controversial ag-gag bill by a vote of 56 to 14, Mercy For Animals hand-delivered over 110,000 signatures directly to the Idaho governor’s office, urging Governor Otter to veto the dangerous legislation.

Idaho citizens and consumers nationwide signed MFA’s petition to Governor Otter to reject Idaho’s ag-gag bill, SB 1337, an ag-gag bill that would stifle undercover investigations and allow criminal animal abuse to continue, undetected, at factory farms and slaughterhouses across the state. These individuals called on Governor Otter to instead push for greater transparency in food production and stronger animal protection laws.

Although Idaho’s House of Representatives bowed to the pressure of corporate factory farming interests by passing this shameful legislation, Governor Otter can still protect the interests of his constituents by rejecting this transparent attempt to shield factory farms from public scrutiny.
“We are calling on Governor Otter to put the health and safety of Idaho’s consumers and the protection of animals above corrupt corporate interests by vetoing this dangerous legislation,” says Mercy For Animals’ executive director, Nathan Runkle. “Consumers want and deserve more transparency in food production, not less. This shameful ag-gag bill sends a clear message: Idaho factory farms have a lot of cruel and abusive practices they want to hide from the public.”
Take Action:
Please sign the petition and call Governor Otter today at (208) 334-2100, even if you have done so already. Urge him to veto the disgraceful ag-gag bill, SB 1337.
