More Than 35,000 Dairy Cows Freeze to Death in Texas Blizzard

Joe Loria January 8, 2016
A New York Times article reports that more
than 35,000 dairy cows perished during a freak snowstorm last week in West
Texas.
The cows, who were trapped outside, were no match for the
below-freezing temperatures and 80-mile-per-hour wind gusts. The two-day storm
that ravaged the region left snowdrifts as high as 14 feet.
Dairy cows are often left outdoors to bear the elements.
They suffer from frostbite and can become buried in the snow and die.
Unfortunately, this tragedy is just the tip of the iceberg
when it comes to dairy industry horrors.
On factory farms, cows exploited for dairy have their tails
cut off without anesthetics and often suffer from infections and open wounds
that go untreated. In order to produce milk in massive amounts, mother cows are
forcibly impregnated year after year. What’s worse, their babies are ripped
from them just 24 hours after birth.
Just take a look at how cows are treated for their milk:

Even the majority of meat eaters agree that modern farming practices are unacceptable. Many say they’d prefer the animals were raised humanely on organic farms. Unfortunately, farms where pigs, […]
