Progress! California Moves Forward With Historic Initiative for Farmed Animals

Rachel Krantz June 26, 2018
This week we take a big step toward ending the era of extreme farmed animal confinement once and for all, as the California secretary of state just approved a groundbreaking ballot initiative to place the Prevention of Cruelty to Farm Animals Act on the ballot this November. The measure will be assigned a ballot number next month.
In the past year, a team of over 1,600 dedicated volunteers turned out to help collect over 660,000 signatures, far more than the 365,800 required to place the measure on the ballot. Now that we’ve achieved this historic milestone, the Prevent Cruelty California coalition, which includes Mercy For Animals, turns to getting out the vote this November.
If the measure passes, it will spare countless animals from lifelong immobilization by outlawing the production and sale in California of meat and eggs from animals confined in battery cages, gestation crates, and veal crates. It could be one of the biggest legal gains for farmed animals in our lifetime—and if you live in California, it needs your help to pass.
Californians may soon ban the sale of pork from “gestation crate facilities like this one.
The opposition—led by the Association of California Egg Farmers, the National Pork Producers Council, and the agribusiness front group Protect the Harvest—will do whatever it can to stop this campaign from succeeding.
Factory farmers have money and lobbyists, but we have our voices. Today, let’s celebrate the incredible accomplishments of animal advocates in California and pledge to continue working to prevent the suffering of farmed animals there and around the globe.
