PROGRESS: Taco Bell to Go Cage-Free by 2016

Earlier this week, Taco Bell announced that it would switch to exclusively cage-free eggs by the end of 2016.

With Taco Bell’s more than 6,000 restaurant locations, these efforts will spare millions of birds from a lifetime of suffering in extreme confinement. It also shows that the future holds no place for cruel confinement of egg-laying hens.

According to an article by Fortune, “Taco Bell says it will be the first fast food chain to fully implement cage-free eggs in its restaurants. McDonald’s has said that its 16,000 locations would change its egg supply within 10 years while Burger King announced in 2012 that its transition would take five years.

Roughly 90 percent of the 280 million egg-laying hens in the U.S. are confined to tiny wire battery cages so small the birds can’t even spread their wings, walk, or engage in many of their most important natural behaviors.

MFA investigations at egg farms throughout the country have documented a pervasive culture of cruelty and neglect.

While Taco Bell switching to cage-free eggs is certainly progress, birds exploited for their eggs are still subjected to unimaginable cruelty and violent slaughter.
