Besides boasting longer lifespans and lower average BMIs, vegans also drastically reduce their risk of getting heart disease, and have the potential to reverse the illness, according to a recent article by Med Page Today.

The author of the article, Dr. Kim Williams, shares his own experience of dramatically lowering his cholesterol and improving his life. As the next president of the College of Cardiology, he had his doubts about the efficacy of a vegan diet in reversing disease. However, after countless patients significantly lowered their risk of life-threatening diseases after adopting a plant-based diet, he realized the extraordinary benefits of a vegan lifestyle.

Williams admits, “I thought I had a healthy diet … just chicken breast and fish. But a simple Web search informed me that my chicken-breast meals had more cholesterol content (84 mg/100 g) than pork (62 mg/100 g). So I changed that day to a cholesterol-free diet, using ‘meat substitutes.’ … Within 6 weeks my LDL cholesterol level was down to 90.”
